I can't say for sure what the taste difference between our homemade marshmallows and the W&S marshmallows is (it's been 17 years since the Christmas I insisted on square marshmallows and I still have yet to ever buy a box of the W&S version), but I can say a fresh batch of homemade marshmallows are probably the best-tasting marshmallows I've ever had.

When I moved to Portland I worked as an editorial intern for Portland Monthly Magazine. I loved it. I also got access to the archives and was able to spend time doing recipe research if things were a little slow. I ended up walking away from the internship with a large stack of recipes, handwritten on little slips of papers I'd stick into my day planner. One of these was a really simple peanut butter recipe.

My dad is famous for one thing: Cooking any food that can be served with maple syrup. (Okay... he might be known for more than one thing, but that's definitely one of the things he is most known for in our family.) Many of the breakfast recipes I make today are original recipes I was taught by my dad, coming from the tradition of making a big syrupy family breakfast on the weekends.

For the past few years, Portland has gotten these beautiful "Indian Summers" with warm sunny September weather. This September, however, is already shaping up to be a wet one. We still have about another week of summer left, but fall already feels like it is in full swing here. I love it! I'm so ready for Autumn, the changing leave colors, fresh apples, and drizzly days.
